There are over 50 brands and more than 500 varieties on the tobacco shelf. Some have been consistently popular with us for years, while others are more niche or seasonal – and that's precisely the real challenge when you're standing in front of the display case: almost every tobacco promises "premium," but you can't tell from the outside of the can which one suits your taste and setup.

We've been selling shisha tobacco for five years – first as Shisha World Würzburg, and since the 2026 rebranding, as Smokez. A lot has passed through our hands in that time, and a few things stand out when you have the same brands on the shelf for years and see what regular customers return and what they repurchase. This comparison is the honest version: no paid placements, no sugar-coating. Taste remains subjective – but smoke behavior, heat resistance, and processing are not. These are precisely the criteria we examine.

How we compare shisha tobacco

Before we rate individual brands, a brief look at the methodology – otherwise, any rating is arbitrary.

We assess six things: taste (does the aroma match what's on the label?), smoke development (density and cloud), heat resistance (how quickly does the tobacco burn with too much charcoal?), variety (are there more than three usable varieties?), value for money, and availability (the best variety is useless if it's constantly out of stock).

The rating is based on three sources: what Niklas and the team themselves have smoked over the years, feedback from our regular customers at the store on Kaiserstraße, and raw sales figures – what is actually repurchased says more than any advertising claim. For each brand, we base our rating on at least several dozen cans sold, not one or two trial sessions.

A look at our own sales figures for 2026 makes this concrete: the best-selling tobacco in the store is by far O's Tobacco African Queen, followed by Holster Ice Kaktuz, Nameless Black Nana, and Adalya Love 66. This doesn't always align with what is most loudly advertised online – and that's precisely why we prefer to compare ourselves. An honest observation on the side: even quieter brands like Stral or Al Massiva sell surprisingly well with us, although they rarely appear on any "top brands" list.

What we deliberately don't rate: nicotine strength. This is highly individual – what feels smooth to one person might overwhelm another. We will mention if a tobacco is strong, but we don't assign points for it.

A note beforehand: Tobacco is a matter of taste, but it is also a natural product with batch variations. A can can sometimes be wetter, sometimes drier. Our ratings describe the normal case across many cans, not the outlier.

Al Fakher – the classic that no one can ignore

For many, Al Fakher is their very first tobacco, and for good reason. The brand from the United Arab Emirates doesn't experiment but produces solid, working flavors – and it's practically always available, which is not a given in the current market.

Flavor profile: honest, direct, no frills. Al Fakher tastes like what's on the label. Double Apple is the flagship – anise-sweet double apple, the flavor most people associate with shisha. Mint and Grape also sell very well.

Best varieties: Double Apple for the classic fan, Mint as a mixing partner, Grape for those who like it fruity-sweet. Interestingly, newer Al Fakher varieties like Grapio Night and Magic Love have now overtaken the classic Double Apple in sales with us – but the classic remains a safe bet for beginners.

Who it's for: Beginners and anyone looking for a reliable base tobacco for mixing. Al Fakher forgives building errors and doesn't require precise heat management.

What you need to know: Al Fakher is relatively moist – it feels more at home in a Phunnel than in a multi-hole bowl, where the juice quickly runs down. Honest weakness: Al Fakher never surprises. If you're looking for aromatic depth and unusual blends, you won't find them here – for that, there are the German premium brands further down.

Adalya – the fruity beginner's favorite

Adalya comes from Turkey and has established a firm place in Germany. The brand stands for fruity, mild varieties that are easy to smoke – the reason why Adalya Love 66 is consistently among our bestsellers.

Flavor profile: sweet, fruity, approachable. Love 66 (watermelon-melon-mint) is the variety that almost everyone likes – and our best-selling Adalya variety overall, one of the top four cans in the entire store. Lady Killer and Ice Bonbon play in the same league – fruity with a slight coolness. The Adalya Shisha Tobacco Cindys 200g also falls into this fruity line and is regularly repurchased by us.

Who it's for: Beginners, freshness fans, and groups where the tobacco should appeal to as many people as possible. Adalya is the safe group tobacco.

What you need to know: Adalya is more heat-sensitive than Al Fakher. Too much coal and the tobacco quickly turns bitter. Better one less coal and a little more patience – then a session will run cleanly for 45 minutes.

Weakness: In long sessions, Adalya loses flavor earlier than the stronger German blends. Great for a relaxed hour, but less so for a marathon evening.

Hookain – Bavarian Premium with a flair for trends

Hookain is one of the most exciting German brands and comes from Bavaria – which, as a Würzburg store, we naturally appreciate. The varieties are recognizable, the names are cheeky, and they dare to be bold with their flavors.

Flavor profile: complex and modern. The Angry Dragon series (Piç, Red, Blue, Green Dragon) is cult, Fuggi Ninja mixes Fuji apple with ginger, Dubai Original Stachio leans towards the sweet-nutty side. This isn't your run-of-the-mill fruit tobacco, but thoughtfully crafted flavors.

Best varieties: Angry Piç Dragon for the dragon fruit fan, Fuggi Ninja for those who want something unique, Blue Mind as a refreshing all-rounder.

Who it's for: Connoisseurs who are beyond the classics and crave character. Hookain rewards clean heat management with astonishing depth of flavor.

Weakness: The price, at up to €28.90, is at the upper end, and individual trendy varieties are occasionally out of stock because they sell out quickly.

Aqua Mentha – when freshness is a must

Aqua Mentha from Berlin has a clear character: freshness. The brand gained popularity with cool, clear flavors and a distinctive freshness kick that polarizes – some love it, others find it too intense.

Flavor profile: fresh, clear, with a distinct coolness. Pure White is the icon – a bright, almost creamy-fresh taste. Watermelon and the menthol-heavy varieties hit exactly the freshness nerve.

Who it's for: anyone who wants that tingling sensation on their tongue after a puff. Unbeatable on warm days.

What you need to know: Aqua Mentha is menthol-heavy – if you don't like coolness, you should steer clear. However, it mixes excellently with fruity varieties to moderate the freshness. It's worth checking out the Aqua Mentha selection.

Weakness: Its strength is also its weakness – the strong coolness isn't for everyone. Smoked neat, Aqua Mentha is too much of a good thing for freshness skeptics.

Holster – the Dark Blend specialist

When it comes to Dark Blend, there's almost no getting around Holster. The German brand creates strong, intense varieties for smokers who know what they're doing.

Flavor profile: strong, intense, with plenty of depth. Ice Kaktuz (cool prickly pear) is the perennial favorite – our second best-selling tobacco overall after African Queen. Quwi Punch, Bloody Punch, and the fruity-cool Punch varieties have a loyal following.

Who it's for: experienced smokers, Dark Blend fans, anyone looking for intense flavor and a good nicotine kick.

Nameless, O's Tobacco & MustH – the premium lineup in brief

Three German brands that excel in different areas.

Nameless is the king of value for money among premium brands. Black Nana – a blackcurrant with mint – has been one of the best-selling tobaccos for years, both with us and nationwide; in our store, it consistently ranks among the top 3, this year just behind African Queen and Ice Kaktuz. If you want modern flavor without a premium surcharge, this is the right choice. The Dark Series offers a stronger option for experienced users.

O's Tobacco delivers smooth, well-balanced premium taste. African Queen (passion fruit-peach-cactus) is not only O's bestseller but our best-selling shisha tobacco of 2026 overall – an example of how a variety can be complex yet mass-market friendly. Virginia vs. Dark Blend – the difference that explains everything

Many of the differences mentioned above boil down to one question: Virginia or Dark Blend? This is the most important decision when buying tobacco, and it has nothing to do with the brand, but with the tobacco base.

Virginia tobacco is air-cured, lighter, milder, and lower in nicotine. Most fruity varieties (Al Fakher, Adalya, many Aqua Mentha varieties) are Virginia. It's more forgiving, smokes easier, and is the standard for beginners.

Dark Blend is fermented differently, is darker, stronger, and significantly higher in nicotine. Holster, the Nameless Dark Series, and many intense varieties use it. The taste is deeper and more "mature," the nicotine kick noticeably stronger.

Taste is subject to trends, and the tobacco market changes rapidly. Varieties that were in almost every bowl three years ago are quieter today, while new blends suddenly become long-runners. This is completely normal – and it doesn't mean that one variety is "better" than another. Popularity and taste are very personal matters.

What has noticeably changed is the price: Due to the tobacco tax shisha 2026, most 200g cans are now closely priced, and very cheap offers have become rare. What's worth paying attention to, therefore, is less the price than whether a variety truly suits your taste – a rich can that you enjoy is ultimately cheaper than three that are only half-empty.

Unopened and stored in a cool place, a tin will easily last one to two years — the best-before date is on the banderole. Once opened and airtight, the aroma remains stable for four to six months. If left open, the tobacco noticeably loses flavour in two to three weeks. Tip: Put leftovers in a freezer bag, press out the air, store in a dark place.

A 200g tin of premium tobacco currently typically costs between €27.90 and €29.90. Individual brands like MustH go up to around €38. Which tobacco smokes best?
"Best" depends on the setup. Moist varieties like Al Fakher or Hookain develop most densely in a phunnel and burn evenly for a long time with two coals. If you want a strong, dense cloud, you're safest with well-tuned German premium brands. Besides the tobacco, heat management is crucial — even the best tobacco will char with too much coal.

Are German brands better than Arabic ones?
Not generally — they are different. German brands like Hookain, Aqua Mentha, or Holster focus on complex, modern flavours and innovation. Arabic classics like Al Fakher score points with reliability, availability, and a straightforward taste at a fair price. For aroma depth, we tend to go for German premium varieties; for a solid all-rounder, we choose the classic.

If we had to summarise a recommendation for most customers after five years in business: Start with Adalya or Al Fakher to get a feel for it. Once you know what you like, it's worth making the jump to German premium brands — Hookain, Nameless or O's Tobacco — because the depth of flavour is simply in another league. And if you're looking for punch and character, Holster is the most honest address for dark blend.
