Why cleaning your shisha is more beneficial than you think

After a few sessions, a shisha can quickly smell musty, the flavor becomes flat, and the bowl gets that yellow film. Sound familiar? That's when it's time to clean your shisha. The good news: You don't need half an hour or complicated techniques – with the right routine and the right cleaner, you'll be done in ten minutes.

In this guide, I'll show you step-by-step how to clean your bowl, downstem, hose, and head, which mistakes to avoid, and which cleaners really get rid of tobacco juice and limescale.

What you need to clean your shisha

You don't need much – but the right tools make all the difference:

• Lukewarm water (definitely not hot – more on that below)
• Shisha Fit for daily cleaning
• Koka Clean for stubborn deposits, tobacco juice, and limescale
• A downstem brush and a sponge for the bowl
• A soft cloth and a clean towel for drying

Important beforehand: Please no hot water

This is the most common beginner's mistake when cleaning a shisha: pouring hot water into a cold glass bowl. Due to the thermal shock, the glass can crack – and then your bowl is trash. Always use only lukewarm water, which protects the glass and still cleans reliably.

Clean your shisha in 10 minutes – step-by-step

Step 1: Empty and rinse the bowl (1 minute)

Carefully pull the downstem out of the bowl. Pour the old water, along with ash and tobacco residue, down the drain. Rinse the bowl immediately with lukewarm water before anything dries. For a glass bowl, this is completely sufficient in 90 percent of cases.

Are there stubborn deposits? A squirt of Shisha Fit, wipe through with a sponge, rinse with lukewarm water, done.

Step 2: Rinse the downstem (2 minutes)

Hold the downstem under lukewarm water and let it run through from the top. If tobacco juice or ash has settled inside, push a downstem brush through and rotate it a few times. A little Shisha Fit on the brush – this reliably removes fine deposits. Rinse again with clear water until the water coming out the bottom is clean.

This is the most important step in cleaning your shisha. An uncleaned downstem carries the stale taste of the last session into your next bowl – and that's exactly what you want to avoid.

Step 3: Rinse the hose (2 minutes)

With a silicone hose, it's easy: Let lukewarm water run through, rinse briefly with Shisha Fit, rinse clean, done. Silicone doesn't absorb flavor, making it the easiest type of hose to maintain.

For a classic leather hose: Never rinse with water. It's enough to hang it open after each session so it dries thoroughly. Of course, you can wipe the mouthpiece or hold it under running lukewarm water.

Step 4: Clean the head (2 minutes)

Remove tobacco residues, rinse briefly with lukewarm water, wipe the inside once with a sponge and a drop of Shisha Fit. With a clay head, dark edges can form after many sessions – these are harmless but can be scrubbed off with some Koka Clean and a brush.

Important: Let the head dry completely before the next packing. Wet heads draw less effectively and the tobacco burns faster.

Step 5: Dry and reassemble (3 minutes)

Place the downstem upside down to drain, lay the head next to it, and pat the bowl dry from the outside. In these three minutes, you can easily wipe the table and sweep up ash residue. Afterward: reassemble everything, and your shisha is ready for the next session.

Getting rid of stubborn deposits and limescale

If your bowl is in a region with hard water, limescale will accumulate at the bottom after a few weeks. Tobacco juice leaves dark streaks in the downstem and residue in the head. This is exactly what Koka Clean is for: a squirt into the bowl, let it sit briefly, brush through, and rinse with lukewarm water. This also removes deposits that water alone can no longer handle.

For dark tobacco juice streaks in the downstem, the same principle applies: Soak the downstem vertically in a container with Koka-Clean water, brush through, and rinse with lukewarm water.

These mistakes you should avoid when cleaning your shisha

Three things I see repeatedly that will eventually ruin your shisha:

• Hot water on cold glass. The classic. Glass bowls crack immediately due to thermal shock. Always lukewarm, never hot.
• Dishwasher. Even if the bowl fits – the aggressive rinse aid program attacks glass and seals. Better by hand with Shisha Fit.
• Dish soap or aggressive cleaners. Dish soap, drain cleaner, oven spray – none of it belongs in a shisha. You'll otherwise inhale the residues directly. Stick to Shisha Fit for daily care and Koka Clean for stubborn stuff.
• Waiting too long. Once the tobacco juice has dried, you'll need twice the time. Rinsing briefly right after the session is much more relaxed.

Care routine: How to keep your shisha automatically clean

You don't have to do the full cleaning every time. The most important rule: After each session, empty the bowl and briefly rinse the downstem with lukewarm water. That's 60 seconds of effort, and you'll save yourself a major cleaning later.
