The Most Important Things in Brief
- A scratchy throat is almost always caused by too much heat – not the tobacco itself.
- Most common causes: too much charcoal, not fully lit charcoal, and an overly packed bowl.
- Immediate help: remove one charcoal, ventilate briefly, and clear the head once.
- Prevention: pack loosely, fully light charcoal, check water level, use fresh tobacco.
- Rule of thumb: less heat = smoother smoke.
You pull on the shisha, and instead of soft, cool smoke, it burns and scratches unpleasantly in your throat? Everyone who smokes regularly knows this problem – and the good news right away: In nine out of ten cases, it's due to too much heat, and you can fix that in a few minutes. Here are the five most common causes and what helps immediately.
Why does the shisha scratch at all?
Shisha tobacco should not burn, but vaporize. The molasses in the tobacco vaporizes at a moderate temperature and provides dense, smooth smoke. If the bowl gets too hot, the tobacco starts to burn – and this creates sharp roasting substances that the water in the bowl can no longer cool down. That's exactly what you then feel as a scratch in your throat. Almost all causes therefore boil down to the same basic problem: Somewhere in the setup, the ratio of heat to cooling is not right.
The 5 most common causes of a scratchy shisha
1. Too much charcoal on the bowl
The classic: Three coals from the first minute, preferably placed in the middle. This will overheat any head. Start with two coals on the edge and only add more when the smoke gets thinner. Less heat almost always means smoother smoke – it will get denser on its own throughout the session.
2. Charcoal not completely lit
If natural charcoal still has black spots, it emits uneven heat and releases substances that burn in the throat. Wait until all cubes have a gray ash layer all around – this takes a good eight to ten minutes on the charcoal lighter. High-quality natural charcoal like Black Cocos glows evenly and then maintains a stable temperature.
3. The bowl is improperly built
Tobacco packed too tightly or tobacco touching the foil or heat management will burn immediately at the point of contact. Sprinkle loosely and airily, leaving three to five millimeters of space at the top – done. On a phunnel bowl, the molasses also stays in the bowl instead of in the downstem, which makes the session much smoother.
4. The water level is incorrect
The water is your cooling. If it's too low, the downstem barely dips in, and the smoke comes out warm and harsh. Guideline: The downstem should be two to three centimeters in the water. Fresh, cold water at the beginning of each session is a must – stagnant water from the last round cools less effectively and tastes musty.
5. The tobacco is too dry
If the tin is left open for weeks, the molasses evaporates – and dry tobacco burns faster instead of vaporizing. Make sure your tobacco glistens with moisture. Close tins tightly after each session, store in a cool, dark place. Fresh supplies can always be found in our shisha tobacco selection.
Quick help: What you can do immediately
If the shisha scratches and you're in the middle of a session, these steps will help immediately:
- Remove one charcoal or push all charcoals to the edge of the bowl
- Blow hard into the hose once – this pushes the old, hot smoke out of the bowl
- Take a two to three minute break so the bowl can cool down
- Check the water level and refill with cold water if necessary
- Pull slower and more relaxed – frantic, deep pulls will further heat up the bowl
How your shisha will never scratch again
With a consistent routine, you'll get smooth smoke every time: always let the charcoal glow completely, pack the bowl loosely, start with two charcoals, and check the water level before each session. If you often struggle with heat spikes, a chimney attachment or HMD is the best solution – both keep the temperature constant and forgive small mistakes in charcoal management. You can find a selection in our chimney category.

FAQ: Shisha scratches in the throat
Why does the shisha scratch particularly at the beginning of the session?
In the first few minutes, the head has not yet settled: the charcoal is fresh and gives off a lot of heat in specific spots. Smoke the first five minutes deliberately slowly and only add the third charcoal later – then the session starts smooth instead of harsh.
Does dark tobacco scratch more than light tobacco?
Darkblend tobacco is stronger and contains more nicotine – many therefore find it more intense in the throat. This is purely a matter of taste: if you prefer it milder, opt for light Virginia tobacco or mix both. This does not change the setup; the heat rules apply equally to both.
Does more water in the bowl help against scratching?
Only up to the correct level. If the downstem is two to three centimeters in the water, the cooling is optimal. Even more water does not provide better cooling, but only higher draw resistance – and in the worst case, water gets into the hose.
Could the hose also be to blame?
Yes. Old flavor and molasses residue in the hose make the smoke musty and irritate the throat. Silicone hoses can be simply rinsed with lukewarm water and hung to dry – this should be done after every second to third session.

Conclusion: Less heat, smoother smoke
If the shisha scratches, it's almost never a cause for concern – but a sign that your setup needs a little fine-tuning. Check the amount of charcoal, the degree of glowing, the head construction, the water level, and the tobacco moisture, and the smoke will be smooth and dense again.
