Return disposable vapes – new obligation from July 2026

From July 1, 2026, something important will change for everyone who uses disposable vapes: You can now simply drop off your empty devices at the store. This is made possible by a new legal take-back obligation. We explain exactly what applies, where you can return your disposable vape, and why it's worth going to the retailer.

What changes on July 1, 2026?

With the amendment to the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG), a nationwide take-back obligation for disposable e-cigarettes will start on July 1, 2026. Specifically, this means: Every point of sale that carries or has carried disposable vapes must accept used devices free of charge – regardless of whether it's a late-night shop, gas station, supermarket, or online shop.

The advantage for you as a customer: The take-back must not be linked to a new purchase. You can return your disposable vape without having to buy anything new. And it doesn't matter where you originally bought the device – even third-party devices will be accepted.

Where can you return your disposable vape?

The selection will be greater than many think from July onwards. The following places will take back your old disposables:

• Stores with a vape assortment: Kiosks, tobacco shops, gas stations, and supermarkets that sell disposable vapes.
• Larger supermarkets and drugstores: Sales areas of a certain size are already obliged to take back small electrical appliances.
• Online retailers: Those who sell online must offer a free return option, for example, via collection point or return shipping.
• Municipal recycling centers: Here you can already drop off small electrical appliances free of charge.

Important: A disposable vape should never go into household waste. The permanently installed lithium battery can cause fires when pressed in the garbage truck – which is why this issue is currently being regulated so strictly.

Why is there a take-back obligation at all?

Behind the new rule lies a real problem: Millions of disposable vapes end up in residual waste every year. They contain lithium batteries, plastic, and electronics – valuable raw materials that are lost, and at the same time a fire hazard. The take-back obligation ensures that devices are recycled professionally instead of simply disposed of.

This is all embedded in the EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542. Among other things, it stipulates that batteries in portable devices must be replaceable in the future. For disposable vapes with permanently installed batteries, this means: From February 18, 2027, they may no longer be sold EU-wide. The take-back obligation from July 2026 is therefore the first step of a larger plan.

Disposing of disposable vapes – how to do it correctly

To ensure that everything runs smoothly when returning, here are the most important points at a glance:

• Collect instead of throw away: Put empty devices in a drawer instead of throwing them in the trash.
• Drop off during your next shopping trip: Take your old vapes with you when you go to the kiosk or supermarket anyway.
• No new purchase necessary: You don't have to buy anything to return your device.
• Do not open: Never try to remove the battery yourself – risk of short circuit.

What comes after the disposable ban? The best alternatives

If disposable devices disappear in 2027, it doesn't mean you have to give up your vaping experience. On the contrary: Alternatives are often cheaper and more environmentally friendly. Rechargeable pod systems with interchangeable liquids or cartridges deliver the same taste but last much longer.
